CIVIS BIP Summer School 2023
This summer school titled participatory tools for urban nature planning and management was organized by University of Bucharest, Paris-Lodron University of Salzburg and Universidad Autonoma de Madrid and held between February and June 2023.
During the course, professors and invited experts from the above-mentioned universities, gave lectures on topics related to Urban Nature planning and participatory methods particularly related to GIS. Over the course of 5 months (1 day of lecture per month (online) from February to May, and 5 days intensive physical activity culminating in a group micro-project).
Below is a list of the courses undertaken.
- Urban nature – Open lab for participatory practices in urban areas
- Participation in urban nature planning and management
- GIS as a supporting tool for participatory management of urban nature
- Case studies related to participatory practices in urban nature planning and management around the world
The curriculum also included 5 days of physical activity in Salzburg - drawing lessons from interdisciplinary theoretical approaches and problematizing them in terms of practicability
A micro project involved the development of a concept for promoting / maintaining public participation for urban nature planning and management in a specific area of Salzburg.

- The basics of Urban planning including the theoretical definitions, types and current trends were explored.
- The applicability in the global and local sphere was also explored
- Different participatory tools including surveys, mapping and spatial analysis were explored
- Experience gained from diverse participation and the various exhibitions and excursions across Salzburg including Hellbrunner Park, Berchtesgarden were the highlights of this course.
